How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the weight-based subclass under NMFC 50093 before tendering. Heavier combined shipments often rate lower (closer to Class 55) than single light cartons near Class 100.
  2. Use leak-tight inner containers inside strong corrugated boxes with absorbent liners and a sealed poly bag. Keep jugs upright, add ‘This Side Up’ arrows, and stretch-wrap/band to pallets.
  3. Prepare hazmat documents per SDS and 49 CFR: proper shipping name, UN/NA number, packing group (if applicable), hazard labels/markings on boxes, and a 24-hour emergency phone on the BOL.
  4. Schedule services suited to chemicals: request protect-from-freeze in cold months for water-based products, and avoid incompatible freight by noting segregation needs when you book.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimize freight class with weight tiers: consolidating boxed chemicals onto one pallet can unlock lower classes and reduce LTL spend.
  • Hazmat-compliant packaging and paperwork prevent carrier refusals, eliminate spill cleanup fees, and cut costly delays at pickup.
  • Accurate NMFC 50093 use reduces reweigh/reclass disputes, protecting margins and stabilizing freight rates across repeat lanes.
  • Clear handling notes (upright only, no stack, temperature needs) lower claim risk and keep boilers’ maintenance schedules on track.
