How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm packaging as drums, metal cans, or boxes and seal tightly. Line boxes with poly and absorbent pads; mark This Side Up to prevent seepage.
- Weigh each handling unit including pallet to choose the correct weight-based class within 55–65. Heavier consolidated freight typically rates closer to Class 55.
- Palletize securely: keep drums upright with chocks, strap and stretch-wrap, and shield closures. Avoid temperature extremes that can thicken or soften compounds.
- State the commodity clearly as “Compounds, boiler sealing” on the BOL, list container type, and note non-hazardous. Attach an SDS if requested by the carrier.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Weight-based classification (no density math) speeds quoting and reduces reclass risks.
- Consolidating into heavier pallets can qualify for lower classes near 55, cutting per-cwt costs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
- Leak-proof, compliant packaging lowers OS&D claims, minimizing delays, reships, and customer downtime in plant maintenance.
