How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 50120 on the BOL and specify form: “dry, bagged” or “liquid, bulk in drums,” along with bag or drum counts and total weight.
- Weigh the shipment accurately since this is weight-based, not density-rated. Example: 40 bags x 50 lb on one pallet = 2,000 lb; or 4 x 55-gal drums ≈ 2,000 lb.
- For dry bags, keep moisture out: use lined pallets, slip sheets, tight stretch wrap, and a top sheet; mark pallets “Keep Dry” and avoid top-loading when bags are soft.
- For liquid drums, use tight closures and compatible gaskets for alkaline additives; secure with drum rings, banding, and corner boards, and prevent rolling with proper blocking.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50, weight-based rating streamlines quoting and typically yields lower base rates compared to higher-class chemicals.
- No density calculations needed, reducing reweigh/reclass fees and shortening tender-to-pickup cycle times.
- Clear packaging notes (bags vs. bulk drums) minimize accessorials and misclassification risk, improving invoice accuracy.
- Moisture control for bagged goods and securement for drums cut damage claims, protecting margins and delivery schedules.
