How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm subclass by total shipment weight to land the proper 55–65 class. This NMFC item is weight-based, so you don’t need density data.
- Use strong corrugated boxes with secure inner containers. For liquids, place sealed jugs in lined cartons with absorbent; for powders, use poly-lined cartons to stop sifting.
- Palletize cartons, keep footprints square, and wrap/band tightly. Mark cartons and the BOL with “Coal Treating Compounds – NMFC 50130” for quick terminal identification.
- Note the non-hazardous status on paperwork and include an SDS if available. Briefly describe the product type (e.g., dust suppressant, surfactant) to avoid reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Weight-based classes enable savings by consolidating shipments to qualify for the lower class, reducing LTL base rates.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and lowers risk of accessorials tied to hazmat handling.
- Straightforward classification (55–65) minimizes reweigh/reclass fees and speeds up quoting and tendering.
- Standard boxed packaging improves stackability and handling, reducing OS&D risk and improving dock throughput.
