How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify NMFC 50155 applies and choose the correct weight tier; classes shift within 50–100 based on shipment weight, so heavier consolidated boxes may rate lower.
- Package securely: seal product in inner liners or tight containers and place inside sturdy corrugated boxes with absorbent and leak-proofing. Use UN-rated packaging when SDS or regulations require.
- Prepare hazmat paperwork from the SDS, including proper shipping name, UN ID, and emergency contact. Apply correct labels and orientation marks on each package.
- Book with an LTL carrier authorized for hazmat. Share exact weight per box, count, and NMFC 50155 on the BOL to prevent reclass or delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct weight-based classing reduces reclass fees and surprise accessorials, keeping landed costs predictable.
- Hazmat-ready packaging and documentation lower spill risk and OS&D claims, improving delivery performance and customer trust.
- Consolidating into fewer, heavier boxes can reach lower classes within 50–100, unlocking measurable LTL savings.
- Using NMFC 50155 on quotes and BOLs speeds rating with carriers and supports better contract pricing negotiations.
