How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the correct weight break to determine whether your shipment bills at Class 55 or 65, and list NMFC 50185 with the chosen class on the BOL.
- Use strong corrugated boxes with sealed inner bags or liners to contain powders or granules; palletize and stretch-wrap to prevent sifting and loss.
- Protect from moisture—add desiccants for hygroscopic binders and mark cartons “Keep Dry” to avoid clumping and product degradation in transit.
- State the exact product name (foundry molding sand treating compound, non-hazardous), box count, and accurate net/gross weights to reduce reweighs or reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low classes (55–65) keep CWT rates competitive for dense mineral or binder blends, helping control LTL spend.
- Weight-based rating can reward consolidation—larger, single-lane moves may qualify for the lower class and better per‑pound pricing.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork, widening carrier options and shortening tender times.
- Standard boxed packaging improves dock flow and reduces OS&D risk, lowering claims exposure and chargebacks.
