How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Classify as NMFC 50230 at Class 70 using actual weight only; no density needed. Specify packaging on the BOL: bags, boxes, drums, pails, or sheeted packages.
- Protect against moisture and heat: line bags with poly, tighten pail/drum lids, and use double‑wall corrugated boxes rated for the gross weight. For sheets, sandwich between pads and stretch‑wrap.
- Palletize for stability: place heavy pails/drums low and centered, stack boxes above, use corner boards, and band to the pallet. Example: twelve 5‑gal pails on a 48×40 with two perimeter bands.
- Label clearly: “Electrical Insulating Compounds — NMFC 50230 — Class 70 — Non‑Hazardous.” Add net/gross weight, orientation arrows for pails, and include an SDS if your customer requests it.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70, weight‑based rating speeds quotes and minimizes reclass disputes.
- Broad packaging eligibility—bags, boxes, drums, pails, or sheeted packs—reduces repacking costs and accessorial risk.
- Non‑hazardous status avoids hazmat fees, expands carrier options, and simplifies paperwork.
- Predictable LTL pricing improves budgeting and lane benchmarking for recurring shipments.
