How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Enter NMFC 50237 at Class 70 and declare accurate gross weight per box or drum; no density calculation is required for rating.
- Use leak-resistant packaging: line cartons with poly bags and seal inner containers; for drums, tighten bungs, gasket lids, and add absorbent pads for viscous blends.
- Confirm hazmat details from the SDS; if regulated, apply correct UN/NA identification, packing group, labels/marks, and include hazmat paperwork on the BOL.
- Palletize upright, band or shrink-wrap securely, add orientation arrows and “This Side Up,” and block/bracing to prevent tip-over or seepage in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 70 minimizes reclass fees and density disputes.
- Faster quoting and TMS automation since the rating is weight-based and straightforward.
- Lower claims risk by using containment and hazmat-ready packaging that prevents leaks and delays.
- Compliance cost control: apply UN-rated packaging only when the SDS indicates regulation, avoiding unnecessary packaging spend.
