Notes
Note 50261: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your blend fits “NOI, not required to bear a DOT hazard label” by checking the SDS and the Note under item 50261, then note this status on the BOL.
- Select compliant packaging: small fills in steel cans packed in wooden boxes; larger volumes in steel drums or cylinders. Use tight closures, liners, and absorbent as needed.
- List on the BOL: “NMFC 50260, Antiknock Compounds, NOI, Class 100,” include packaging type, piece count, and accurate gross weight for each handling unit.
- Unitize securely for LTL: band wooden boxes to pallets, block and brace drums, and keep away from food-grade freight. Request non-stack if closures are sensitive.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- No hazmat labels or placards required lowers fees and broadens carrier options, often improving service speed and coverage.
- Fixed Class 100 with weight-based rating simplifies quoting and prevents reclass disputes tied to density or dimensional changes.
- Recognized steel and wood packaging reduces damage risk and claims, protecting product integrity and limiting OS&D costs.
- Clear NMFC mapping and packaging detail cut inspection delays and minimize accessorials from rework, relabeling, or repackaging.
