How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 50280 at Class 60 for boxed refrigerating compounds containing at least 85% water, and rate by the actual weight of each box.
- Use leak-resistant inner packaging—sealed pouches or bottles inside poly liners—with absorbent pads to catch moisture and protect outer cartons.
- Palletize cartons on a dry 48x40 pallet, add a top sheet, then band and stretch-wrap; mark This Side Up and follow the box ECT rating to set safe stack height.
- If shipping pre-frozen gel packs, note that freezing is acceptable; avoid requesting freeze-protection unless truly required to prevent unnecessary accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 provides favorable LTL pricing for heavy, water-based mixtures compared with higher-class chemical items.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and reduces documentation time, accelerating pickup and tendering.
- Clear box packaging and a single NMFC item minimize reclass risks, cutting chargebacks and dispute cycles.
- Weight-based rating improves cost predictability; accurate piece weights help avoid carrier weight and inspection adjustments.
