How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bill as NMFC 50303, Class 55, non-hazardous. Note the product function on the BOL (chain lubricant, plastic/rubber cleaner, or tire-mounting fluid) plus package type and total weight.
- Use tight-sealed boxes or approved drums. Line boxes with poly, add absorbent pads, and leak-test caps to prevent slippery residue that can trigger carrier rewraps.
- Palletize with containment: keep liquids upright, add corner boards, top sheet, and 70+ gauge stretch wrap. Mark This Side Up and Liquid Soap Base for quick cross-dock recognition.
- Control temperature and movement. Avoid extreme heat/cold if the formulation is sensitive, and brace drums with chocks or dunnage to stop rolling during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low-cost moves with Class 55: competitive LTL rates versus higher-class chemical blends, especially on recurring lanes to tire shops and manufacturing plants.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines operations: fewer carrier restrictions, no hazmat surcharges, and simpler paperwork for faster tender-to-pickup cycles.
- Straightforward rating without density math reduces reclass fees and billing disputes; quoting by weight is faster and more predictable.
- One classification covering chain lube, plastic/rubber cleaners, and tire-mount fluids simplifies SKU mapping, lowering admin time and audit adjustments.
