How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Quote and label as NMFC 50390, Class 55, and list the packaging type (bags, boxes, drums, or Package 120) and piece count on the BOL; no density calc required.
  2. For bags or boxed powders/pastes, use inner liners, tape all seams, and palletize on 40x48 with stretch wrap and corner boards (e.g., 20 boxes at 25 lb each).
  3. For drums, place on pallets, tighten closures, band and block to prevent rolling; note actual weight per drum and request liftgate or forklift service if no dock is available.
  4. Protect from moisture and leakage: keep loads upright, apply ‘Do Not Top Load’ for bag stacks, and add tray liners or absorbent sheets under units if seepage is possible.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Single Class 55 rating simplifies quoting and reduces reclass/density disputes, minimizing billing adjustments.
  • Non-hazmat status expands carrier choices and avoids hazmat fees, improving landed cost and transit flexibility.
  • Standardized packaging options (bags, boxes, drums, Package 120) speed dock handling and lower claims when properly palletized.
  • Clear NMFC 50390 alignment supports consistent routing guides across facilities and strengthens leverage in LTL rate negotiations.
