How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the additive is non-corrosive and review the SDS for any HazMat details (UN/NA number, packing group, and ER contact). Declare HazMat on the BOL if regulated.
  2. Pack product in sturdy, UN-rated corrugated boxes with sealed inner liners (poly bag or bottle) and absorbent material to contain drips. Mark orientation and apply any required HazMat labels.
  3. Quote and book by weight at Class 55—no density math needed. Example: “Electroplating additive, NMFC 50420, Class 55, 38 lb per box.”
  4. Palletize tightly with stretch wrap and corner boards. Segregate from foodstuffs and oxidizers, and keep SDS accessible for pickup, transit, and delivery.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable LTL pricing with a single Class 55 rating based on weight, improving quote accuracy and budget planning.
  • Lower reclass risk when boxed correctly and documented with proper HazMat details, helping avoid delays, fees, and carrier refusals.
  • Dense, compact boxes improve cube utilization and stacking, cutting per-pound costs on multi-box pallets.
  • Non-corrosive status broadens carrier acceptance versus corrosives, opening more lanes while still meeting HazMat compliance.
