How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use a rugged wood crate or heavy-duty box; add 2x4 runners under crates so forklifts can lift evenly and block each piece to prevent movement.
- Pad contact points with foam or rubber and add edge protectors to avoid chipping; use dividers if multiple tops ship in one crate.
- Mark center of gravity, apply Do Not Stack where needed, and keep each handling unit within carrier weight limits for safe LTL handling.
- Include a packing list with casting type and jobsite reference, then photograph the packed crate for records and claim support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and booking—no density math, faster LTL rate comparisons.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and fees, streamlining documentation and transit.
- Crate/box packaging reduces breakage on brittle edges, lowering claims and project delay costs.
- Clear NMFC 50520 labeling minimizes reclass and rebill risk, protecting margins for utility and contractor shipments.
