How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package with cradle dunnage and blocking, band sections with steel or heavy polyester strapping, and add edge protectors to prevent chipping at bells and spigots.
- Handle with slings and a spreader bar or forklift extensions; never insert forks into the pipe barrel. Mark center of gravity and lift points for crews.
- List on the BOL: “Pipe, Concrete, Reinforced — NMFC 50610, Class 60, Non-Hazardous,” plus piece count, largest OD, and unit weights to avoid reclass.
- Verify carrier limits for single-piece weight and length; large sections often route as partial TL or flatbed. Schedule jobsite cranes where liftgates aren’t suitable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies rating—no density math, faster quotes, and consistent LTL pricing across lanes.
- Correct NMFC labeling reduces reclass fees, inspection delays, and claims exposure for chipped or broken ends.
- Nesting bell-and-spigot sections and tight banding can cut linear feet and detention, lowering total transportation cost.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and expands carrier options for civil and utility projects.
