How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 50625, Class 70 on the BOL and quotes, and describe the item as concrete or cement-filled double-wall plastic sewer pipe or fittings.
- If couplings are detached, place them in sealed packages or cartons; when included, secure to the pipe or fitting with strapping and protective wrap.
- Palletize fittings and short pipe sections; cap pipe ends, use edge protectors, and avoid overhang. For long bundles, block and brace to prevent ovalizing the plastic shell.
- Confirm overall lengths to avoid overlength fees, choose carriers experienced with construction materials, and request non-stackable handling when crush risk exists.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable LTL pricing despite the added density from concrete fill.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and minimizes compliance friction.
- Clear packaging rule for detached couplings reduces inspection failures, reclassifications, and rebills.
- Accurate NMFC usage speeds quoting and planning for municipal and contractor projects, helping control accessorials and damage costs.
