How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe on the BOL as “Tile, drain, or drain tile fittings—earthen/ceramic—NMFC 50700, Class N/A” and list piece count, bundle count, longest length, total weight, and pallet dimensions.
- For pipe lengths, nest by diameter, cap both ends, set on wooden saddles, and strap with edge protectors; keep bundles fully supported with no pallet overhang and mark Do Not Top Load.
- Pack fittings in dividers or molded inserts inside double-wall cartons, then crate or palletize; fill voids, stretch-wrap, and band to prevent abrasion and chipping.
- Flag any lengths over 8 ft and request long-freight handling; for farm or jobsite deliveries, add liftgate or appointment accessorials, or consider a flatbed for 10–12 ft pieces.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower damage rates on brittle earthenware by nesting, capping, and crating, which cuts claim costs and keeps contractors on schedule.
- Accurate NMFC 50700 labeling and declared lengths reduce re-bills, reclass fees, and surprise accessorials for long freight.
- Standardized pallet footprints and color-coded bundle tags speed cross-dock moves and improve carrier acceptance and transit times.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options, enabling sharper LTL rates and simpler paperwork across regional and national lanes.
