Notes

Note 50752: NOTE-Pipe, tubing, or pipe or tubing fittings having surfaces liable to damage must be in boxes, crates, fiberboard tubes, or completely wrapped with material of sufficient strength to prevent abrasion, marring or denting during transit. Threaded or machined ends liable to damage must be protected with plugs or caps securely held in place and be made of materials of sufficient strength to prevent damage.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use this grouping reference for non-earthen conduits, pipe, tubing, smokestack sections, and fittings; check Note item 50752 and select the exact item by material and form.
  2. Bundle long lengths on skids with wood chocks, end caps, and multiple steel bands; mark overall length for carriers and note if pieces over 8-12 ft.
  3. Box or crate loose fittings and elbows; protect threaded or coated ends with caps and separators to prevent abrasion and claim disputes.
  4. For mixed materials in one shipment, segregate by type and packaging (bundles vs crates) and list counts per package on the BOL referencing NMFC 50750.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Reduce reclass exposure by signaling the non-earthen conduit group and guiding carriers to the correct specific item.
  • Improve rate accuracy on long freight by declaring bundle lengths and packaging upfront, minimizing oversize add-ons.
  • Cut damages with end caps, dunnage, and rigid crating for bulky smokestack sections, lowering claim costs.
  • Streamline purchasing-to-logistics handoff: one NMFC reference covers PVC conduit, metal pipe, composite tubing, and fittings.
