Note 5082: NOTE-Applies only on envelopes, packets or other containers containing printed advertising matter and a product sample in a container. Product sample and its container must not exceed 30 grams in weight.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack printed promos, lookbooks, and sample kits in sturdy corrugated boxes (32 ECT or better), add corner protection, and poly-bag contents to resist moisture.
- List on the BOL: “Advertising Samples, NOI — NMFC 5080, Class 300” and mark each carton with piece count to prevent carrier reclassification.
- Keep boxes uniform and under manageable weights; if palletizing, use stretch wrap and edge boards but keep the primary packaging as cartons only.
- Avoid mixing non-paper premiums or odd merchandise in the same box; mixed contents can trigger a different NMFC per note references and cause inspection fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 300 helps budget campaign mailings and trade show shipments without density calculations.
- Correct labeling reduces reclass and inspection charges, protecting margins on time-sensitive marketing drops.
- Better cartonization and moisture protection cut damage claims, preserving the presentation quality of promo materials.
- Choosing LTL for multi-carton sample distributions can beat parcel costs per kit and simplify scheduling across regions.
