Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
50960.00 Conduits or Conduit Connections, for underground work, wooden, lined or not lined (bored timber, inside diameter four inches or less) 65

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the inside diameter is 4 inches or less and record piece length and bundle dimensions; this item’s Class 65 rating is dimensions-based, not density-based.
  2. Bundle bored-timber conduits tightly with banding and edge protectors, cap each end to keep the bore clean, and place bundles on skids for forklift access.
  3. Separate fittings or conduit connections from hollow pieces, bag small hardware, and label bundles to avoid mixing lined and unlined sections in transit.
  4. Support long bundles at multiple points and strap with spreaders to prevent bowing; avoid stacking heavier items on top of hollow wooden sections.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 65 eliminates density calculations and streamlines quoting for LTL and volume moves.
  • Fewer reclasses: clearly noting “ID ≤ 4 in” and actual bundle dimensions reduces inspections, disputes, and surprise charges.
  • Lower damage risk: proper end caps, dunnage, and tight banding cut claim exposure and keep jobsite schedules on track.
  • Broad carrier access: non-hazardous wooden goods qualify for most networks; only length-based handling fees may apply on long sticks.
