How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the inside diameter is 4 inches or less and record piece length and bundle dimensions; this item’s Class 65 rating is dimensions-based, not density-based.
- Bundle bored-timber conduits tightly with banding and edge protectors, cap each end to keep the bore clean, and place bundles on skids for forklift access.
- Separate fittings or conduit connections from hollow pieces, bag small hardware, and label bundles to avoid mixing lined and unlined sections in transit.
- Support long bundles at multiple points and strap with spreaders to prevent bowing; avoid stacking heavier items on top of hollow wooden sections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 65 eliminates density calculations and streamlines quoting for LTL and volume moves.
- Fewer reclasses: clearly noting “ID ≤ 4 in” and actual bundle dimensions reduces inspections, disputes, and surprise charges.
- Lower damage risk: proper end caps, dunnage, and tight banding cut claim exposure and keep jobsite schedules on track.
- Broad carrier access: non-hazardous wooden goods qualify for most networks; only length-based handling fees may apply on long sticks.
