How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Nest round or spiral ducts and band to skids with corner protectors; cap ends to prevent ovalization and denting, and mark Do Not Stack for long lengths.
- Box or crate elbows, tees, takeoffs, and dampers; bag hardware and gaskets separately and note piece counts on the BOL for faster check-in.
- If components include plastic liners, insulation, or gaskets, state “metal with other materials” on paperwork to match the NOI language and avoid reclass delays.
- Provide exact dims and weight for each handling unit; flag oversize items over 96 in. and use extended skids so duct ends don’t overhang.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NOI reference (NMFC 51045) reduces reclass fees and admin disputes, keeping invoices clean and predictable.
- Damage prevention via nesting, end caps, and banding lowers claim rates on thin-gauge ductwork and delicate fittings.
- Rate optimization by consolidating fittings and standardizing pallets helps avoid oversize surcharges and improves LTL quoting.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, improving turnaround for HVAC contractors and metal shops.
