Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
51055.00 Ducts or Raceways, iron or steel, 16 gauge or thicker, separate or combined with other materials not exceeding 10 percent of total weight, plain or with openings, with or without opening covers 50

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify the commodity on the BOL as 16 ga+ iron/steel ducts or raceways and note any covers; confirm any non-steel components are under 10% of total weight.
  2. Bundle channels in 4–8 piece packs with steel banding and edge protectors, then place on 8–12 ft skids; block and brace to prevent fore–aft slide.
  3. Record exact scale weights per bundle and in total; quote and tender at fixed Class 50 without density. Include overlength notes for 8–12 ft pieces to avoid surprises.
  4. Prevent abrasion and bent lips by nesting with cardboard or wood dunnage between pieces and capping ends; avoid shrink-wrap only on bare metal.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 50 pricing lowers rate volatility and reduces reclass disputes.
  • Heavy-gauge steel tolerates stacking, cutting packaging costs and minimizing damage claims.
  • Weight-based classification speeds quoting and auditing—no density studies or dimensional calculations required.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and supports faster pickups across LTL networks.
