How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack together to match the listing: place fill caps and their corresponding pipes in the same heavy-duty box or wood crate, then secure to a pallet for LTL pickup.
- Protect threads and sealing faces: use plastic thread protectors or pipe plugs, wrap caps with VCI paper, and add divider boards to prevent metal-on-metal contact.
- Immobilize the load: chock round pipes, add cross-bracing inside crates, and strap cartons so pieces cannot roll or shift during terminal handling.
- Bill correctly: list as “Fill Caps and Pipes, Oil Tank — NMFC 51100 — Class 50 — Non-Hazardous — Box/Crate” and include piece counts and approximate lengths.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low, fixed Class 50 keeps LTL base rates sharp for dense, durable metal tank hardware.
- Single combined listing reduces reclass risk and billing disputes versus rating caps and pipes separately.
- No density requirement streamlines quoting and eliminates surprise reweigh/reclass fees.
- Boxed or crated units stack cleanly, improving trailer cube and lowering the chance of linear-foot charges.
