How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the ring material (steel, aluminum, rubber) and note “non-plastic” on the BOL; use NMFC 52260, Class 50, and include package count.
- Pack rings in sturdy cartons with dividers or sleeves; nest by size to limit movement, add VCI paper for metal rings, and pad sharp edges.
- Palletize tight: strap and stretch-wrap cartons, keep within pallet footprint, and label cartons “Non‑Plastic Thread Protectors” to avoid misclass.
- Keep SKUs clean—do not mix plastic with non-plastic rings in one carton; add detailed pack lists and weights to streamline quotes and claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and TMS rating.
- Clear “non-plastic” identification reduces reclass disputes and surprise fees.
- Efficient nesting and smart cartonization cut pallets and handling, lowering LTL spend.
- Damage-resistant packing protects pipe and conduit threads, preventing costly delays.
