How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the freight as “Stop Cock/Valve Indicator Posts,” apply NMFC 52410, and mark Class 60 on the BOL to prevent inspection reclass.
- Bundle long steel or ductile iron posts in 3–6 units with steel banding on wood skids; cap threads and flanges and add end guards to prevent puncture damage.
- Keep bundle length flush with the pallet and avoid overhang; mark center of gravity and request long-freight handling if pieces exceed 96 inches.
- For fire protection or waterworks jobs, crate posts with targets, wrenches, and bases together, adding a labeled small-parts box to prevent accessory loss.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: Fixed Class 60 rating simplifies quoting and budgeting without density calculations.
- Lower risk and claims: Proper bundling and capping reduce bent posts and surface damage, keeping projects on schedule.
- Broader carrier options: Non-hazardous hardware is widely accepted across LTL networks, improving routing and service levels.
- Fewer fees: Accurate use of NMFC 52410 minimizes reclass charges and audit disputes, streamlining billing and compliance.
