Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
52720.00 Containers, refuse, salvage or waste, conveying or dumping type, iron or steel, 16 gauge or thicker, for use with hoists or lift trucks, with or without casters:
52720.01 Not nested 100
52720.02 Nested 85

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Specify if units have casters and secure them. Strap or block wheels to the frame and add edge protectors so bands don’t cut into 16‑gauge steel.
  2. Load via fork pockets or hoist lugs and balance the center of gravity. Ship empty, latch lids, and pin dump mechanisms to prevent accidental tipping.
  3. Use a sturdy skid or pallet sized to the container base. Add 2–3 steel or poly bands and corner boards; block inside the pallet perimeter to stop shifting.
  4. Note construction details on the BOL: iron or steel, 16 gauge or thicker, with/without casters, dumping type, and whether units are nested or stacked to reduce cube.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable class range (85–100) streamlines rating and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees and invoice surprises.
  • Non-hazardous status simplifies handling and typically avoids hazmat surcharges, improving total landed cost.
  • Proper securing of casters and dump hardware lowers damage risk and accessorials, cutting claim costs and delays.
  • Hoist and forklift compatibility speeds terminal transfers and pickup/delivery, shortening dwell time and improving on‑time performance.
