Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
53000.00 COOLERS GROUP: Articles consist of Coolers, Cooling Boxes, Cooling Rooms or Refrigerators, or Parts thereof, see Note, item 53002, as described in items subject to this grouping.

Notes

Note 53002: NOTE-The provisions in items 53125 through 53145 apply regardless of the nature of the insulating medium used but will not apply when the primary body structure is comprised of foam, cellular, expanded or sponge rubber or plastic.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify whether you’re shipping consumer coolers, commercial refrigerators, modular cooling-room panels, or service parts, then reference Note 53002 to select the correct sub-item within this group.
  2. Box units in heavy-duty cartons: use double-wall boxes, foam-in-place, corner guards, and door/shelf immobilization. Cap any exposed lines and keep items upright with clear “This Side Up” labeling.
  3. For parts (compressors, evaporators, gaskets, hinges), box separately with snug interior cushioning and bag small hardware; mark part numbers on the box for easy receiving.
  4. For large appliances boxed for LTL, strap the boxed unit to a pallet for stability and record outer box dimensions and weight to ensure accurate rating and avoid reclass.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate use of the Coolers Group and related sub-items reduces reclass fees and speeds bill-of-lading creation.
  • Box-first packaging guidance cuts damage to doors, glass, and compressor mounts, lowering claim rates and service delays.
  • Clear part boxing and labeling accelerate maintenance workflows at delivery, reducing install time and labor costs.
  • Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving total landed cost.
