How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density: measure the fully packed unit (box, crate, or package with pallet), compute PCF, and list NMFC 53125 with the density on the BOL.
- Match packaging to the unit: hand‑portable thermoelectric coolers go in sturdy boxes; kegerators can use crates or Package 2457; ice merchandisers and vending machines fit boxes, crates, or Packages 107/2199 with internal blocking.
- Prep the appliance: drain kegerator lines and drip pans, remove or secure shelves and bins, strap and wrap doors/lids, cap power cords, and pad glass, faucets, controls, and compressor areas.
- Palletize for survivability: center weight on a 48x40 skid when possible, avoid overhang, add edge protectors, banding, and tilt/impact indicators, and label This Side Up and Do Not Stack if required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize LTL rates with density-based classing—tight packs and right-size crates raise PCF and can lower class-driven costs.
- Use approved packaging options (boxes, crates, Packages 107/2199/2457) to minimize reclass/rebill risk and reduce damage claims.
- Streamlined handling from prepped units—drained lines and secured doors speed cross-docks and cut accessorials tied to rework.
- Standard footprints and protective bracing broaden carrier acceptance during peak beverage/ice seasons, improving capacity and transit reliability.
