How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 53145 and Class 85 on the BOL, and specify whether the unit is shipped in a box or a crate for accurate rating and handling.
- Protect the finished enamel: add foam edge guards, non-abrasive wrap, and corner blocks; secure loose trim, hinges, and glass inserts before sealing.
- If boxed, choose double-wall or heavy-duty carton, then band the box to a pallet with at least two straps and mark Do Not Stack and This Side Up.
- If crated, anchor the door to internal cleats or rails with padded contact points, use 1x4 slats or plywood faces, and apply shock and tilt indicators.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Consistent pricing: fixed Class 85 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and surprise inspection fees.
- Lower damage costs: box/crate requirement protects painted steel surfaces, cutting claim rates and reship expenses for service parts programs.
- Faster carrier acceptance: clear NMFC usage and packaging detail speeds dock processing and minimizes handling exceptions.
- Better consolidation: appliance OEMs and repair distributors can palletize multiple doors safely, improving cube utilization and LTL freight rates.
