How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 53930 and Class 70 on the BOL and note packaging type (bagged, boxed, or in drums) to prevent inspection delays.
- Palletize bags or boxes tightly, add a moisture barrier top sheet, and stretch-wrap to protect this dry organic material from humidity and spills.
- Control dust and spillage by using lined bags or sealed cartons; if shipping in drums, secure each drum with banding and use non-slip deck boards.
- Avoid over-stacking lightweight bags; build even layers and corner-post where possible to keep unitized loads square and stable in LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 means no density calculation, reducing reclass fees and making quotes consistent across carriers.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, simplifying scheduling and accelerating tender acceptance.
- Flexible packaging—bags, boxes, or drums—lets you match plant operations and control material and handling costs.
- Tight palletization improves cube efficiency and reduces product loss from moisture or burst bags, lowering claims and total landed cost.
