NMFC Description Class

Notes

Note 54171: NOTE-Shipper must show density on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment. If density is not shown and shipment is inadvertently accepted, class will initially be assessed under the 'in bales compressed to a density of less than 22 1/2 pounds per cubic foot' provision. Upon satisfactory proof of actual density, class will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. On the BOL, describe as Cotton, NOI and specify form: compressed bales, loose fiber, or field modules; include bale count, wrap, and strap type.
  2. Select clean, dry vans with spark-free interiors; enforce no‑smoking and keep loads away from heaters or hot freight; use breathable covers if floor sweat is likely.
  3. Protect from moisture at every handoff—avoid wet cross‑docks, tarp during short transfers, and reject damp bales to prevent claims and degradation.
  4. Confirm carrier acceptance of combustible fibers and any hazardous flags; some carriers limit co‑loading with machinery or require added fire‑watch steps.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NOI wording and packaging detail curb reclass fees and unexpected rate changes.
  • Compressed, well‑wrapped bales improve cube utilization, speed handling, and lower LTL minimum charges.
  • Moisture and heat controls reduce claims, preserving mill yield and fiber grade.
  • Prequalifying cotton‑capable carriers minimizes exceptions and detention during peak ginning season.
