How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote LTL using NMFC 54220 at Class 100 and select packaging "Boxes"; print "COTTON SAMPLES" on the BOL to avoid misclassification.
- Keep fibers clean and dry by lining cartons with a poly bag, sealing seams, and adding a desiccant pack for humid routes.
- Bag swatch bundles, add light cushioning, and block voids so the box resists compression and shedding during cross‑docks.
- For lab or buyer evaluations, tag each sample with origin/lot ID and note "No Commercial Value" on documents for smoother cross-border moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 removes density math, speeding quotes and reducing reclass risk.
- Non-hazardous cotton samples are widely accepted by LTL carriers, keeping options open and accessorials low.
- Boxed packaging reduces snagging and contamination, helping prevent claims and protecting lab-grade integrity.
- Predictable classification lets mills, gins, and testing labs standardize budgets and compare freight rates across lanes.
