How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack straight tubular lengths in rigid boxes with internal blocking and end caps; prevent bowing and scuffing with corrugated dividers cut to length.
- Mark cartons and the BOL: "Plastic pipe/joint covering, non-foam, NMFC 54455, Class 125." Reference NMFC note item 54456 when describing the material.
- Palletize long boxes lengthwise with no overhang; strap twice lengthwise and twice crosswise. Do not top-stack heavy freight.
- Separate non-foam coverings from any foam or cellular versions in the same shipment to avoid reclass and delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 removes density math, accelerating quotes and rating.
- Boxed packaging and straight-length support reduce damage on thin-walled coverings, lowering claim costs.
- Non-hazardous plastic simplifies routing and reduces compliance overhead for LTL moves.
- Accurate NMFC callout (54455) minimizes reclass/rebills, stabilizing rates for MEP suppliers and jobsite deliveries.
