How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use moisture control and rigid boxes: poly-bag each paper/felt mold, add corner and face padding, then double‑wall box to prevent pulpboard swell and crush.
- If straps ship in the same box, isolate them: sleeve steel straps in cardboard or an inner carton so they can't abrade or puncture the felt surfaces.
- Palletize conservatively: no box overhang on a 40x48, limit stack to two layers, add a top sheet, and mark Do Not Stack to protect soft molded edges.
- Document precisely on the BOL: use the full NMFC description, note whether straps are in the same or separate boxes, and choose the correct subclass within 125–300.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower claim risk by separating steel from soft composite molds, keeping the felt-lined surfaces clean and undamaged for field installation.
- Cut LTL costs by qualifying for the lowest applicable subclass within 125–300 through compliant boxing and clear labeling.
- Speed tendering and terminal handling—boxed, non-hazardous commodity with simple handling marks reduces exceptions and inspection delays.
- Improve inventory accuracy: counting molds and strap bundles separately on the BOL simplifies receiving at jobsites and distributor DCs.
