How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 54910 and Class 85 on the BOL, and note the packaging type (boxes, crates, or drums) with an accurate piece count to avoid inspection delays.
- Use heavy double‑wall cartons (min. 275# burst) with molded foam or pulp nests; for large pieces, crate with 2x4 blocking and cross‑bracing; for many small units, load drums with divider packs.
- Palletize with top and bottom sheets, edge protectors, two steel or poly straps, and stretch wrap; keep the center of gravity low and mark Do Not Top Load.
- Isolate from delicate finishes; line crates to prevent abrasive rub and request dry handling during damp seasons to protect packaging integrity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85—no density math, faster quoting, and fewer reclasses or billing disputes.
- Non‑hazmat status reduces compliance steps and eliminates hazmat surcharges, speeding tender and pickup.
- Standard box/crate/drum options balance protection for brittle ceramics with controlled packaging costs, cutting claim rates.
- Ideal for foundries, glass shops, and labs shipping small batches; consolidate multiple crucibles to one pallet for better LTL rates.
