How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the commodity precisely: metal cups for cartridge cases or bullet jackets, components only—not live ammunition. Note brass or copper material on the BOL.
- Use rigid boxes with inner poly bags and corrugated partitions to prevent nesting shift and rim deformation. Add VCI wrap if parts are oiled or rust‑sensitive.
- Palletize tight: no overhang, even weight across the 48×40, corner boards, 2 bands plus stretch wrap. Limit top load pressure to protect thin-walled cups.
- Document counts by bag or layer and include net weight per box. For cross-border moves, verify export controls (ITAR/EAR) and mark “components only” to avoid hazmat confusion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 rating keeps LTL rates low for dense metal components, improving cost per pound on recurring replenishment lanes.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options, reducing accessorial risk and transit delays.
- Clear, consistent identification of component cups reduces inspections and misroutes, accelerating dock turns and delivery speed.
- Damage‑resistant boxing and pallet standards cut claim frequency on precision stampings, preserving downstream manufacturing yield.
