How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item as “NMFC 55300 – Cigar Cutters, Boxed, Class 100” on the BOL, and include piece count; dimensions help with capacity planning even though class is fixed.
- Pack in rigid corrugated cartons with dividers or foam so blades cannot shift; bag or sleeve each cutter to protect finishes and prevent scuffs.
- Palletize with 48x40 pallets, use corner boards and a top sheet, then stretch-wrap tightly; avoid heavy top loads to prevent crushing small cartons.
- Note “consumer accessory, non-hazmat” in shipment instructions; ensure cutters are closed or locked and that inner cartons won’t open during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies quoting and negotiations, reducing reclass disputes and helping you forecast landed costs for tobacco accessory replenishment.
- Consistent “boxed” packaging streamlines pick, pack, and pallet builds for distributors serving cigar lounges and retailers, speeding dock turns.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat fees or documentation, improving network flexibility during peak seasons.
- Clear classification accelerates TMS setup and SKU routing rules, cutting manual reviews and shortening time from order to tender.
