How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Flag it clearly: mark BOL and pallet labels with “Spoiled Cheese – Not for Human Consumption” and NMFC 55490 to avoid food recirculation issues.
- Use leakproof packaging. Line corrugated boxes with heavy poly liners or use sealed plastic pails, add absorbent pads for whey/oils, then stretch‑wrap and band to pallets.
- Ship ambient as specified. Do not request refrigeration; if odor or swelling is a concern, use vented lids, quick pickup, and direct routing to the reprocessor.
- Provide accurate piece counts and weight, and note “for reprocessing” in special instructions. Choose carriers that accept non‑edible dairy by‑products.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 60, often lower than generic food waste ratings and less prone to reclass fees.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Tight, absorbent packaging cuts spill cleanups, accessorials, and claim exposure tied to leakage or odor.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds facility acceptance at renderers/reprocessors and reduces delivery refusals.
