How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the listed packaging: sturdy boxes for loose bolls or rigid crates for long stalks. Line interiors with kraft or poly to prevent lint snagging.
- Bundle stalks with soft ties and cap cut ends. Add dividers or cardboard tubes so stems don’t crush during side pressure in LTL handling.
- Palletize to footprint with no overhang, mark “Top Load Only” where appropriate, and use corner protection to resist compression on stacked freight.
- Book at NMFC 55910, Class 150; density is not required for the class, but provide weight and dimensions for rating. Example: “5 crates cotton bolls on stalks, NMFC 55910, Class 150.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass/rebill risk, keeping margins predictable for craft wholesalers and decor suppliers.
- Non-hazardous status speeds tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges, supporting faster turnarounds during seasonal retail peaks.
- Crate or box options align packaging cost to order profiles—boxes for small decor kits, crates for long stems—cutting damage and returns.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines compliance across carriers, minimizing disputes and preventing costly exceptions or inspection delays.
