How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item fits 56040: artificial or natural (non-live) floral decor such as wreaths, branches, sprays, and designs packed in boxes or packages.
- Guard sharp or wired ends on branches and sprays with tip protectors, bundle stems, and use double-wall cartons for heavy sets or glass components to prevent punctures.
- Compute density for rating: weigh the sealed carton, measure L x W x H, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight by cube (pcf). Note density on the BOL.
- Stabilize delicate foliage and dried grasses in inner bags, fill voids with kraft or foam, cap corners, and mark cartons Fragile/Do Not Crush to reduce handling damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you compress wreaths and foliage, reduce empty space, and potentially qualify for a lower freight class and better LTL rates.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat-related surcharges, simplifying routing and costing.
- Seasonal decor (e.g., holiday branches) benefits from boxed consolidation, which cuts handling, minimizes minimum charges, and improves on-time performance during peaks.
- Accurate NMFC pairing for decorative items lowers reclass/reweigh disputes, reduces claim exposure for crush or puncture damage, and stabilizes landed costs.
