How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Determine density from the packed shipment: weigh the sealed box or crate and divide by its cubic feet to select the correct class within 50–400.
- Protect fragile shapes (gazing globes, candelabra, trophies) with double-wall cartons, cell dividers, foam corners, and “This Side Up” labels; crate heavy wood carvings with internal bracing.
- Separate crushable items like pinatas and party hats from dense items; use master cartons for small favors, hair clips, or decals to create consistent density and reduce damage.
- For boxed shipments, follow Item 170: right-size new corrugated (32 ECT/200# test or better), no overhang on pallets, and print NMFC 56290 and calculated density on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimized pack-out drives lower classes for dense goods (e.g., wood carvings), reducing LTL spend without changing carriers or service levels.
- Single NOI coverage simplifies quoting across diverse SKUs—ornaments, decals, trophies, scrunchies—cutting reclass fees and admin time.
- Damage-light packaging for fragile décor yields fewer claims on trophies and glass globes, improving carrier relationships and future rate negotiations.
- Seasonal peaks for holiday items and party favors are easier to consolidate under one item number, enabling fuller trailers and better lane-level pricing.
