How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 56360 and list Class 85 on the BOL; select “boxes” as the packaging type so carriers don’t apply density rating.
- Prevent brine leaks: keep calcium chloride in sealed inner bags, add a poly liner or absorbent pad inside cartons, and cushion dehumidifier components with foam corners.
- Keep cartons upright and dry; mark This Side Up and Keep Dry. Strap master cartons to pallets and avoid loading near metal parts that brine could corrode if moisture occurs.
- When kitting units with refill packs, separate the desiccant from electrical parts with a divider and tape the bill of materials to the outside for quick dock checks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable LTL quotes and reduces reclass risk from density disputes.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges, paperwork delays, and carrier restrictions.
- Standard boxed packaging speeds cross-dock handling and lowers accessorials tied to special handling.
- Kitting dehumidifiers with calcium chloride in one box reduces pick touches and shrink, streamlining fulfillment and lowering total landed cost.
