Notes

Note 56546: NOTE-Also applies on Surgical or Obstetrical Procedure Packs, consisting of two or more of the following disposable articles, produced from the material specified, in one sterile pack for one particular surgical or obstetrical procedure: drapes, sheets, pillowcases, gowns, caps, masks or other disposable clothing.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm items are disposable paper or nonwoven apparel (gowns, drapes, caps, shoe covers) packed in boxes. Avoid mixing with reusable textiles or metal-hardware PPE that could trigger a different item.
  2. Calculate density for each shipment: measure carton or pallet cube (L x W x H in inches ÷ 1,728) and divide total weight by cubic feet. Example: 48 lb ÷ 6.0 cu ft = 8 lb/ft³.
  3. Pack for compression and protection: right-size 32–44 ECT cartons, use inner poly to keep products clean and dry, and avoid void space that lowers density and raises freight class.
  4. Bill of Lading tip: describe as “NMFC 56545, Disposable Medical Clothing, Boxed, Density-Based.” If garments have special barriers or reinforcements, review related notes (Items 56546/56547) before booking.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven pricing lets you optimize pack-outs—tighter cartons increase density and can reduce LTL class and overall freight spend.
  • Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options, shortens tender-to-pickup time, and cuts hazmat fees to zero.
  • Clear NMFC mapping reduces inspection reclasses and surprise adjustments, improving quote accuracy and margin predictability.
  • Standardized boxed SKUs palletize cleanly for higher stackability, lowering damage risk and shrink-wrap/handling costs.
