Notes

Note 57158: NOTE-Applies on terminal devices for controlling air pressure, temperature or volume in forced air cooling or heating systems, with or without heating or cooling coils or electric resistance grids.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Determine density (PCF) for each packaged unit: weigh the box or crate and divide by its cubic feet to select the correct class under Item 170. Example: 250 lb in a 20×40×30 in crate → 250 ÷ ((20×40×30)/1728) ≈ 9.0 PCF.
  2. Match packaging to vulnerability: use double-wall boxes with foam for compact controllers and actuators; choose wood crates with blocking and internal braces for larger VAV housings or damper assemblies to prevent torsion and bent shafts.
  3. Prepare for handling: mount cartons/crates on pallets with banding, avoid overhang, protect protruding actuators, and mark airflow/arrow orientation to keep ports and dampers from being crushed during transit.
  4. Document precisely on the BOL: list NMFC 57157, packaging type (box or crate), actual weight, measured dimensions, and calculated PCF; reference the related note (item 57158) if your shipment includes accessories or configurations addressed by that note.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density entries unlock lower freight classes for compact, heavier units, reducing LTL spend while keeping you compliant with Item 170.
  • Purpose-built boxes or crates minimize actuator and sensor damage, cutting replacement costs, RMAs, and jobsite delays for HVAC projects.
  • Clear NMFC 57157 labeling and PCF on the BOL reduce inspections and reclass fees, leading to faster pickups and fewer billing disputes.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving rate shopping and transit flexibility for multi-stop HVAC shipments.
