How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product fits NOI scope: vitamins, capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, and other dietary supplements in cartons; use the density item when shipping boxed units.
- Calculate density to set class: weigh the carton, measure L×W×H in inches, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight by cubic feet (e.g., 40 lb in 3.0 cu ft = 13.3 pcf). Higher density generally means a lower class.
- Package for damage control and compliance: follow Item 170. Use strong corrugated boxes, add inner dividers for glass bottles, seal powders in bags, and cushion tubs to prevent leaks and odor transfer.
- Bill and label clearly: on the BOL state “Dietary Supplements, NOI, NMFC 57310,” include measured density (pcf), and mark non-hazardous. Palletize square, avoid overhang, and shrink-wrap with corner boards for stack stability.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based pricing lets you optimize pack-outs to boost pcf and reduce LTL class, directly lowering freight spend on compact supplement cartons.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and eliminates hazmat surcharges, documentation, and handling fees.
- Accurate NMFC usage and BOL detail reduce reclass/reweigh disputes, cutting accessorial charges and preventing transit delays.
- Standard boxed packaging improves cube utilization and stackability, reducing damages and claims for high-MSRP nutraceutical goods.
