How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the product fits NOI scope: vitamins, capsules, tablets, gummies, powders, and other dietary supplements in cartons; use the density item when shipping boxed units.
  2. Calculate density to set class: weigh the carton, measure L×W×H in inches, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight by cubic feet (e.g., 40 lb in 3.0 cu ft = 13.3 pcf). Higher density generally means a lower class.
  3. Package for damage control and compliance: follow Item 170. Use strong corrugated boxes, add inner dividers for glass bottles, seal powders in bags, and cushion tubs to prevent leaks and odor transfer.
  4. Bill and label clearly: on the BOL state “Dietary Supplements, NOI, NMFC 57310,” include measured density (pcf), and mark non-hazardous. Palletize square, avoid overhang, and shrink-wrap with corner boards for stack stability.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based pricing lets you optimize pack-outs to boost pcf and reduce LTL class, directly lowering freight spend on compact supplement cartons.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and eliminates hazmat surcharges, documentation, and handling fees.
  • Accurate NMFC usage and BOL detail reduce reclass/reweigh disputes, cutting accessorial charges and preventing transit delays.
  • Standard boxed packaging improves cube utilization and stackability, reducing damages and claims for high-MSRP nutraceutical goods.
