Note 57362: NOTE-Flat plain tin (tinned sheet iron) discs, not further punched, not crimped nor otherwise processed, will be classed as plain tin plate.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Tin-plate discs, NOI — NMFC 57360, Class 55, non-haz.” Include piece count and total weight for each pallet or skid.
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or fiber drums with liners; bag discs inside to prevent scuffing and rust. Add edge guards and band to a 48x40 pallet.
- Keep loads dry and flat. Place moisture barriers or VCI paper between discs, then shrink-wrap and top-cap to stop shifting during LTL handling.
- Review Note, item 57362 for any exclusions or special cases to avoid misclassification, especially if discs have unusual coatings or assemblies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 gives predictable LTL quotes—no density rating needed, reducing reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Non-hazardous metal product streamlines tendering and limits compliance overhead compared with regulated materials.
- Packaging in boxes or drums minimizes edge damage and claims, protecting margins on stamped or blanked inventory.
- Consistent NMFC mapping speeds SKU onboarding for metal stampers and OEMs, improving rate shopping and routing decisions.
