How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List the item on the BOL as “Disks, leather” and include the packaging type (bags, boxes, or drums), piece count, and palletized status to prevent reclass delays.
  2. For boxes, use double‑wall cartons; stack disks flat with chipboard sheets between layers and line with a poly bag to control humidity. For drums, choose poly‑lined fiber drums with tight lids; add desiccants.
  3. Palletize with no overhang on a 40x48 pallet, strap cartons, and apply full stretch wrap. Drum loads should be chocked and banded; avoid stacking that could flatten or ovalize the leather.
  4. Even though Class 77.5 is fixed, provide accurate weight and dimensions to avoid cubic minimums. Keep leather away from oils or solvent-based goods to prevent odor and finish transfer.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 77.5 enables consistent LTL quotes across carriers and lanes, simplifying cost forecasting for craft, footwear, and gasket producers.
  • Lower compliance risk: Using the exact NMFC wording and correct packaging minimizes reclass fees, inspections, and claim exposure.
  • Non‑haz status speeds routing: No hazmat surcharges or carrier restrictions, improving transit options and cycle times.
  • Packaging tuned to product shape reduces scuffs and deformation, decreasing returns and claim costs while preserving finish quality.
