How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to fragility: use double-wall boxes for lighter displays and plywood crates for cast stone or image panels; follow NMFC Item 170 standards for cushioning and blocking.
- Bundle and bag small parts and display hooks, then place inner cartons inside a master box or crate to prevent punctures; mark hardware locations clearly on the exterior.
- Calculate density to select the correct class within 50–400; weigh the boxed/crated piece and use the outside cubic dimensions you are tendering to the carrier.
- Palletize mixed kits for store rollouts: label cartons 1 of X, add corner boards, and shrink-wrap to a single base to reduce loss, rework, and accessorials at terminals.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you engineer cost: nest stands, right-size cartons, or consolidate parts to lift density and yield lower freight classes where possible.
- Packaging to Item 170 minimizes reclass and inspection fees, reduces OS&D on fragile displays, and speeds claim resolution if an issue arises.
- Accurate NMFC 57410 on the BOL improves carrier confidence, which can translate to steadier LTL rates and fewer delays from inspections.
- Kitting displays, hooks, and fixtures by store lowers touches at delivery, trims redelivery or appointment fees, and accelerates merchandising rollouts.
