Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
57540.00 Doors, retaining (Grain Doors) or Strips, freight vehicle door protection, steel strapping and paper combined, in packages 60

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Palletize bundled strips with paper faces protected: add corrugated edge guards, stretch-wrap tightly, and keep steel strap edges away from other freight to prevent abrasion.
  2. Note the fixed rating on the BOL: “Grain door retaining strips, steel/paper, NMFC 57540, Class 60, non-haz.” Include piece count and package type to avoid reclass.
  3. Keep moisture out. The paper component wicks water, so use poly sheeting or shrink wrap, and store off the warehouse floor if holding overnight.
  4. For long lengths headed to rail yards or grain elevators, secure to skids with cross-bands and blocking so bundles don’t telescope during LTL transfers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 60 means no density calculation, lowering reclass fees and quote variance.
  • Lower total landed cost: Class 60 typically prices better than higher classes, improving margins on agricultural and trailer-maintenance supplies.
  • Fewer compliance hurdles: non-hazardous materials streamline tendering and reduce accessorial risk tied to special handling.
  • Reduced OS&D exposure: steel strap reinforcement and proper packaging minimize edge crush, cutting damage claims and delays.
